人们都说“读书之秋”，但若能在夏日午后的凉爽树荫下悠闲地沉醉于书中也很不错。总不至于只有秋天才是读书天。读书的人无论窗外下雪还是蝉鸣都会读书，就算警察叫他“别读了”，他也照样会读（请参考《华氏451》）；而不读书的人无论发生什么都不会拿起书本。所以说，季节之类的并没有那么重要。

有一位名叫伊琳娜·赛博特的女摄影家，为作家拍摄写真几乎是她的主业。去纽约时，为了让她帮我拍照，我经常去拜访她开在格林尼治村附近的工作室（实际上，是出版社要求我去的）。她不愧是专业拍摄“作者近照”的人，摄影功底了得。我们有二十多年的交情。

连载中提到的T恤并没有多贵重，也谈不上艺术性如何，只是将我个人中意的旧T恤摊开拍好照片，并配上一篇短文。我不认为这样一本书会对谁有怎样的用处（自然也不人为它有助于解决当下日本面临的诸多问题）。它或许可以算一种展示，说明在二十世纪后半期到二十一世纪前半期的日子里，一个小说家平时穿着这些轻便的衣服，度过了还算轻松快乐的生活。它说不定能成为后世的一份民俗资料，也或许什么用处都没有。对我来说嘛，其实怎样都好，只希望读者能沉浸其中，享受我这一微不足道的收藏。

特别是夜深人静，一个人慢悠悠地听音乐的时候，最适合喝的酒就是威士忌。啤酒太淡，葡萄酒太高雅，马天尼有点装腔作势，白兰地又太克制……这样一来，也就只好拿出一瓶威士忌了。

每次比赛接近尾声时，我都一面想着这些美味，一面竭尽全力地跑啊跑。冰啤酒总是让人情不自禁啊。
