　　Jonathan D. Spence was born in Surrey,

England, in 1936. He was educated at Winchester College and at

Cambridge University and received his Ph.D. from Yale University in

1965. He is George Burton Adams Professor of HIstory at Yale, where

he is also chairman of the Council on East Asian Studies and

director of the Division of the Humanities.

让人觉得讽刺的是，中国人对国史和县史的撰写至为周备，地方记录却多半未见保存。我们通常找不到验尸官验尸、行会交易、严密的土地租赁记录，或教区出生、婚姻、死亡记录之类的资料——而正是这些资料，使我们能对欧洲中世纪后期的历史，作极其周密细致的解读。

兄食其弟，夫食其妻，辄相谓曰：与其为人食，不如吾自食，稍延旦夕之命。

改嫁者，夫家财产及原有妆奁，并听前夫之家为主。

妇人夫亡无子守志者，合承夫分，须凭族长择昭穆相当之人继嗣。

凡祖父母、父母为人所殴，子孙即时获救，而还殴，非折伤勿论；至折伤以上，减凡三等。致死者，依常律。
